Good to know if you have any type of hernia

Inguinal hernia surgery

A hernia occurs when abdominal contents (such as fat or the intestines) protrude through a weakened area of the muscle and connective tissue that make up the abdominal wall. They can be found in many areas of the abdomen.

Hernia symptoms

As the muscles get weaker abdominal contents are pushed into the hernia sac. Sometimes this can be intestines or fat.

incisional hernia

Most surgeries can be done in an outpatient setting. For some bigger hernias, patients stay in the hospital one or more days.

hernia pain

Symptoms can vary from person to person. Some have virtually no symptoms, while others have significant symptoms.  The most common sign of a hernia is a bulge or lump.

The lump may be painful and the pain may worsen when coughing, sneezing, lifting or standing for a long time. The lump may become bigger when coughing, bending or straining.

Other symptoms include nausea and vomiting.

umbilical hernia

A doctor can usually confirm the presence of a hernia during a physical exam. The mass may increase in size when the patient coughs, bends, lifts or strains the abdominal muscles.

strangulated hernia

A strangulated hernia occurs when the tissue gets trapped very tightly in the hernia and its blood supply is cut off. It is a surgical emergency

Hernias don't go away on their own. Only surgery can repair a hernia.

Hernia surgery
Strangulated intestine

A mesh repair involves covering the hernial defect by placing the mesh on one of the layers of the abdominal wall
